On Monday night, United gave their fans a small taste of euphoria after a horrible season when they overcame Brentford 3-0 in their final home encounter of the season. The win ended a three-match losing streak for Ralf Rangnick’s team, who put on an entertaining attacking show.
After a superb effort from Anthony Elanga, Bruno Fernandes volleyed home the opener on his final appearance at the Theatre of Dreams.
In the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo increased the lead from the penalty spot, making atonement for a goal that was disallowed by VAR for off-side in the first 45 minutes.
With 20 minutes remaining, centre-back Varane rounded off the scoring by firmly heading home Alex Telles’ corner. It was the Frenchman’s first goal for the club since joining from Real Madrid in the summer, and he expressed his delight on social media.
Varane commented, beside a compilation of photographs from the match: “Yes, sir. What an incredible feeling it is to score my first goal for this incredible club at Old Trafford! “
Manchester United currently have two games left to play this season, with trips to Brighton and Crystal Palace on the horizon.
